Standards Based Integration:
Allows real time data transfer amongst EMR systems and healthcare stakeholders using interface engines such as Mirth, Ensemble Intersystems, Rhapsody, etc.
Use of healthcare standards like HL7, CCD, CCDA, QRDA, X12. In Standards Based Integration, EMRs typically exchange patient demographics, scheduling, claims, laboratory and radiology results, transcriptions, immunizations, etc.
Bulk Transfer Integration: Involves extracting patient data and creating batch files to export them to a shared location. Use of delimited files that could be parsed by the consumer or populating database views exposed by the target system. Bulk Transfer is the method of extracting the patient data, creating batch files and transferring them to a secured location to be further processed by the target system. Batch file may be in the form of CSV, HL7 or XML file and size can range from MBs to GBs.
Web Services/API Integration: EMR provides access to the live clinical data using RESTful APIs/web-based services through the API endpoints. In an interoperable system, the EMRs open up their internal data and provide access through the web APIs. The EHRs also provide access to the other vendors to come up with their own APIs built on top of the EHR to increase the usability of the data. A clinical application can request to fetch the clinical data from EMR using web APIs on authentication. The EMR upon receiving the request, pushes the clinical data through the requested APIs in standard message formats such as JSON. All the mojor EMR vendors such as Allscripts, Cerner, EPIC etc have come up with their own sets of APIs having fixed set of functioning capabilities.
